As medical science, particularly the study of mammalian genetics, has advanced, we are becoming increasingly able to bring to life animals that carry and express genes that they do not normally have. Such genes could include those for microbial and chemical resistances, genes for beneficial enzymes, as well as undiscovered genes that may develop intelligence or remove a person's predisposition to cancer, alcoholism, or schizophrenia. I believe that we must be extremely cautious in applying such technologies in creating "better" humans, for it is not in our place to determine which biological and social traits are "right" for our children to have. Such matters are best left to evolution, which has to this date done a fine job of selecting for individuals who carry favorable traits. Furthermore, such genetic experimentation may ultimately lead once again to attempts to rid the world of "lower" humans and to replace them with a master race. Of course, society should still proceed with, though with great caution, efforts to manipulate genes to enhance the quality of life for all people.
